Advanced sit inside sea kayak rentals

We have kayak rentals available to the general public they are at Fort Worden, they are sit on tops and we allow people to use them in a safe, limited range.

We also have sea kayak tandems & solos, and we do, sometimes, rent them out unguided to people.  And when we rent them out to people, we don't limit where people can paddle with them.  Folks can rent from us and go on great big camping expeditions for weeks.  But we have to vet people carefully before we rent them out.  People have died kayaking in the kayaking in the greater Port Townsend area.  If you've never taken a sea kayaking class, you should either take a tour with us or go rent our sit on tops. Not everyone in the rental party needs to be a serious sea kayaker, but we need to know there's at least one person making decisions and who could rescue the others who knows what they are doing.

The easiest way to demonstrate to us that you're safe to rent these kayaks to is to have a sea kayaking certification by the American Canoe Association, the Mountaineers Society, or similar organization.  But a certification isn't strictly required.

What we want to know to give you an unguided rental of the sea kayaks without area restrictions is that 1) you can keep yourself out of trouble & 2) you can get yourself out of trouble if you get into it.

Staying out of trouble -

We want to know that you understand how currents & tides, marine weather, and the interaction of the two work.  We also want to know that you know how to brace if you get into rougher conditions.

Getting out of trouble -

We want to know that you know how to rescue yourself and/or your companions in the event of a capsize, and also that you have a plan for emergency communication in the event that you need it.

Sometimes people get very offended by the fact that we need to vet people in order to rent the sea kayaks to them.  We're sorry for any inconvenience but we are primarily concerned with the fact that people don't come to harm on our watch.  We already are providing ample opportunities for folks without this skillset to get out on the water through both our outstanding tours & through using our beginner friendly kayak rentals in a more controlled environment.
